Sealing and Looking After Ceramic Tiles

Most ceramic tiles are glazed and do not need to be sealed, however some ceramic tiles can benefit from sealing. Here is a list of ceramic tiles that can benefit from being sealed, particularly in wet areas:

  • Crackle Glazed Tiles
  • Handmade Tiles
  • Quarry Tiles
  • Unglazed Ceramics

Why Seal your Tiles?

If you have tiles from the above list then the next question is why seal your tiles? Tiles that are more susceptible to moisture penetration need help to prevent this and therefore need sealing. Sealing your ceramic tiles benefits by preventing the penetration by water, dirt, oil and grease. Thus making your tiles easier to clean, maintain and remain more attractive.

The surface of the tiles should be clean and completely dry. Use a acid free cleaner and sponge or cloth to ensure that the tiles are clean and free from surface build up of any type. Ensure that the tiles are clean, dry and in an environment between 10-25 degree C.
