Need an interior designer? Not anymore….

It’s a crying shame for all the interior designers out there, but due to advances in technology particularly that of Google Sketchup it enables us to do bespoke attractive and accurate 3D design. And in doing this making the previously daunting task of choosing how to tile your kitchen or bathroom into a straightforward decision.

You can just see it now Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen in the bread line, his overblown cuffs and collar dirty from sleeping rough, his long hair greasy and face covered with a 2 week beard full of crumbs from last nights Gregg’s that he fished out of the bin.

Tiles aren’t for anyone, they’re for everyone….

One of my friend’s is forever asking the question “What would you do if you won the lottery?”. It’s his ‘go-to’ question. If there is a break in talking, an awkward lull or he meets someone new within an hour or so somehow he slips this question or, sometimes unsuccessful statement, into the conversation. For some reason I was thinking of him and his originally entertaining now annoying question (my most recent answer has been “not talk to you”) when I discovered The Selby.

It’s a wonderful blog full of creative people with creative homes, each very unique and different, and from the looks of them most devoid of a budget. But when I looked at each of the bathrooms and kitchens and saw the effect and tiles they used this budget wasn’t unattainable (this doesn’t include Pharrell Williams as he probably has a lifesize Stewie from family guy in there).

It amazed me that despite the extremely scattered locations of the various photo shoots a lot of them incorporated similar tiled ideas. I thought i’d share some of my favourites in both design, unique-ness, style and finish on here for you.

The two minimalist bathrooms are the most fascinating to me. Both incorporate a simple idea of slate grey (similar to these, one being actual slate and the other being porcelian tiles) with pale walls and both could be put together for a modest budget. Yet they are so effective. The external swimming pool makes use of the most simple of a stone mosaics which in our shop we sell similar for £7.50 a sheet. Also there is another example white brick tiles used as a kitchen splashback, similar to our OB bevelled tiles.

But to return to and to answer my frustrating friends favourite question. What would I do if I won the lottery?

“Well I wouldn’t need to redecorate my kitchen or bathroom tiles, as they would already look distinctive and attractive for a reasonable budget.”

A brief bit of (bathroom) inspiration…

Today after a long conversation with , may I first say, a lovely old lady I decided that I wanted to show some of the varied styles that our bathrooms can aspire to. She wanted a chocolate brown tile NOT mosaic that measured no more than  5x5cm. Despite the fact to my best knowledge this doesn’t exist nor does what I discovered as her understanding of chocolate brown constitute chocolate brown at all, more beige.

Then I stumbled across some bathroom designs which she seemed to like despite the fact that they did not fill this criteria at all. She then described them as a “brief bit of inspiration” (odd turn of phrase) then strolled out of the shop. I thought i’d share them with you:

As you can see here the travertine colour ties in well with the wood cabinets and the large format tiles add space to the shower cubicle.

The use of pebble mosaics around the base of the bath is an interesting touch and is a nice contrast to the beige stone elsewhere in the room.

The bold use of dark mosaics and flooring create in impact in this stunning wetroom.

This is just a limited variation of designs for bathrooms, although you can see once  more how the choice of tiles can make a substantial difference in any.

Top Three of The Week

After browsing the internet for hours in an attempt to find some inspiration for contemporary use of tile design , I stumbled across some of the gems below. But it seemed to surprise me as if I wasn’t already aware, that regardless of the space, style, age and appearance of the houses tiles seem to always be considered a functional rather than stylish product. This is something I spend hours on everyday trying to weave some imagination into the use of plain white wall tile or brown porcelian floor tile.

Seen on their own our OB Bevelled White 20x10cm tiles do not inspire the Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen inside of you. But used in the right context they can create both distinction and style in kitchens and bathrooms for an affordable price.  For these reasons I am going to endeavour to use this blog to demonstrate and inspire excellent designs.

Advances in software for photo realistic visualisations mean that creating designs is more straight forward and easy to demonstrate, some of which will be up here soon. But, I’m starting today by showing my Top 3 inspirational pictures/designs of this week. These don’t have to be limited to tiling as they are just demonstrations of inspiration in design and interiors:

1. Cubby House by Edward Moore

edwardsmoore_yellowtrace5You can see here the effective use of Bevelled White Brick tiles by the bath. The use of grey grout is clever as it ties the area back in with the carpet but is simple and stylish.

2. Villa Vals

underground-home-designs-swiss-mountain-house-16Although away from my brief slightly this underground Swiss holiday home is stunning. Constructed to be almost entirely underground but still make use of the natural light it’s an inspiration in design. Click here to find out more

3. Natural Stone

autarchy_formafantasma_breadTo be honest natural stone can be tiring at times. It’s dominance of colours, style and the whole market of tiles is frustrating. But then it’s difficult to argue with when it is done well. It’s contrast of colours, the texture and variations create an attractive timeless look. Here you can see the bringing together all the stone with the neutral shades of beige to a great effect.

New Tiles – Casora & Casora Grip

We would like to introduce a special tile – Casora. This glazed porcelain tile is 340 x 340mm and has two different types; non slip and normal. It has a very rustic, natural appearance as seen below:

naples-casoria-grip-12

Although both tiles have a virtually identical appearance they have completely different textures. Casora Grip has a very rough feel which gives excellent non slip in all conditions; making it an perfect choice for a non- slip balcony or patio tile or suitable for a wet-room floor. However, Casora has the same beautiful rustic natural stone look but with a  smooth texture suitable for both floors and walls. This is an excellent advance in the non slip tile market as previous non slip tiles tended to not be attractive enough to pass for anything except industrial or commercial use; these tiles have a non-slip rating of R.

naplesminimale-1

With it’s attractive natural appearance alongside the quality, frost proof durability that a glazed porcelain tile guarantees, Casora Grip is the perfect tile for non-slip patios, balcony, wet-rooms and porches. Also with Casora you can decorate the wall in the same tile but with a smooth finish. The prices is as follows:

Casora Grip £36.52 inc VAT

Casora £32.99 inc VAT

Here is a link to our shop were you can purchase both online:
